First Sunday 2010

Our record snow is nearly gone, thanks to lots of sunshine and occasional warmer temperatures. If 37 and 38 degrees F can be considered warmer. But an air temperature of 38 combined with cloudless skies and a brilliant winter sun will melt the snow pretty quickly.

Firsts are always significant to us as humans. First child, first car, first home, etc. etc. This being the first Sunday of a new decade, I can't help but be a little reflective and also forward looking to what lies ahead.

Paramount on my hope to change list is my weight. I am not quite at my maximum weight as we start this new year, but too close for comfort. That comfort being mine. I am carrying so much weight in my middle that many things are uncomfortable to do. So without dieting, but with a change in eating habits and lifestyle, I hope to pare my middle down to a more comfortable size. I am not interested in a rock hard body or body building dimensions, but I am interested in not carrying health impacting weight.

Yesterday, I finished the last of Dan Brown's books. Last for me, his first book. So am I better for the time spent? No, actually, not really better or worse. Brown is a very good waver of suspense but I do know enough of the current technology and world religions to recognize his tales are purely fiction. In my opinion, good fiction, but fiction none the less. Would I recommend his books? Certainly. But with the warning that you must realize they are pure fiction.

I also recommend the Trilogy, or "The Lord of the Rings" series by J. R. R. Tolkien. Again, fiction. But to me interesting fiction and well done.

I find myself looking back to http://biologos.org/ for reading material, but I did decide to take a short break from theological reading. So I may look back to Mitch Albom author of "Tuesdays with Morrie, Have a Little Faith, The 5 People You Meet in Heaven" as well as others. I read "Tuesdays with Morrie" and I have "Have a Little Faith" but haven't read it yet.

There are several American authors of the 20th century that I would like to read more of, including Ambrose Bierce, William Faulkner, Jesse Stuart and Flannery O'Conner to name some of my favorites. I have read a good portion of Steven Crane and Willa Cather, but not all. Someday perhaps.
Not a lot of New Year resolutions on my part. Just resolve to be more like Christ, and if I can accomplish that everything else will fall into it's designated place.
Cheers.
