In just a matter of a few hours I will be leaving for our annual trip to Ocracoke. This is the 15th year of the men's retreat there. The last several years we have had the entire motel to ourselves. I heard there would be about 100 men this year. I think it was about the same last year. I am always surprised at the turn over in who goes. We have been getting more men from our Spanish congregation each year, which is great. I wish I had the fortitude to learn their language as they have learned mine. Be nice to communicate with them better.
I haven't done the reading I want to do lately. I have put three books on hold and what little reading I am doing is in the book Arnold gave me, "Why Men Hate Going to Church." A very interesting book mostly about the difference between men and women and how each process information and life, with some very insightful comments on the environment of church. The way Christian churches of all kinds operate makes them more friendly to women then men. Not that it is intentional or by design, but because of the way church and worship has evolved over the centuries.
I keep reading hoping the author has some valid and realistic solutions rather than just exposure of the situation. I am taking the book with me in case I have time to read while away.
On a side note, I have been asked to represent the store I work in at a local credit union employee wellness/environmental awareness day on May 2nd. I will have to fit in a lot of extra curricular activity between this Sunday and the following Saturday morning. I am hoping to have a demonstration of light bulbs and be able to show with actual meter readings the savings that result in using the new CFL bulbs. I find many people skeptical. I find those people mostly uninformed and borderline ignorant. Even if they are educated. So I am hoping to have verifiable real time data to prove the point.
Hope to report on Ocracoke in a week or less. Look to http://www.brucesmusings.blogspot.com/ for pictures. I am past my bedtime so that blog won't be updated tonight. Oh well.
Cheers.
